poseidon adventureAs you well know, a badass boat scene can really turn even a crappy movie into something tolerable. From the original Mutiny on the Bounty in 1935 through to tomorrow’s Pirates of the Caribbean 16: Ship of Sequels, boat movies have been capturing our imagination for over eight decades.

Below are the top 10 best boat movies of all time, listed in chronological order:

Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)

This classic film starred Charles Laughton and a young Clark Gable. The film tells the tale of Captain Bligh on the HMS Bounty, the crew’s revolt against him and the revenge he takes a year later. The 1962 remake of this one features Marlon Brando, and is worth seeing, as well.

Show Boat (1951)

The story of a riverboat captain’s daughter and her tragic love affair with a riverboat gambler. It stars Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner and Howard Keel.

The Caine Mutiny (1954)

For whatever reason, stories about mutiny seem to resonate with viewers. Humphrey Bogart and Van Johnson star in this tale of a first officer who relieves his captain of duty and then faces a court martial for mutiny.

Ship of Fools (1965)

This movie takes place on a ship traveling from Mexico to Europe during the 30s. It follows the tales of the ship’s doctor who falls in love with La Contessa, as well as the tales of many other passengers.

The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine star in this classic film about a group of passengers who struggle to survive after their ocean liner tips completely over. Kurt Russell starred in a 2005 remake of this one, as well.

Raise the Titanic (1980)

Jason Robards and Richard Jordan star in this film. An excellent example of Cold War-era film, it follows U.S. and Russian crews as they try to harvest a rare mineral from the hull of the Titanic.

Crimson Tide (1995)

Gene Hackman must have a thing for boats. In this one, a first officer stages a mutiny (see? It keeps creeping up). The captain intends to launch missiles before confirming launch orders, and the first officer wants to stop the trigger-happy captain.

Titanic (1997)

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet star in what is perhaps the most famous boat movie of all time. It’s certainly the highest-grossing boat movie of all time.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

In what has now become common parlance, a “perfect storm” – a conflagration of weather conditions – create a killer storm that catches a fishing boat in its midst. This one stars George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. Just watching this one makes you want to call and make sure your boat insurance is current.

Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)

Who doesn’t love Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow? This one, as well as the sequels, has forged a permanent mark on movie history.
